The new Ghost in the Shell project, Arise, was officially shown off at the premier event this morning. The story looks to be a prequel, showing Mokoto's early years. Aside from the teenage body, there are scenes in the trailer of Mokoto coming to grips with her cybernetic body, along with her past. There have been shakeups among the voice cast as well, with Maaya Sakamoto taking over the reigns from Atsuko Tanaka. While Maaya is a talented voice actress, I'm wary of casting her as The Major. Perhaps I'm too used to Atsuko's amazing voice work in GITS SAC and the original movie.
The first part of the new series, "Ghost Pain", will play in Japanese theaters for two weeks starting on June 22nd. Unfortunately, most of us will have to wait for the official Blu Ray release on July 26th. Arise will be released in four, 50 minute episodes. Much like Gundam Unicorn, the episodes will be shown in theaters before being released on Blu Ray. While Production IG's record with their Ghost in the Shell franchise has been stellar, I'll wait until the first episode to embrace this new off-shoot. I'm not adverse to change, but hopefully this isn't too much at once.
