Kara no Kyoukai - 4

Episode four really throws us for a loop after the "happy ending" of episode three that left us with a smiling Shiki. It's obvious that something traumatic has happened to Shiki and SHIKI to land her at deaths door in a hospital. She basically has to learn to reuse her "gift" with the help of Aosaki. Also noted is we finally get to see Aosaki "in action" if you will as a magus. Sure it was just casting one spell that couldn't do anything but give us pretty animation effects, but at least we know she isn't helpless.

The bigger thing for me was how vulnerable they made Shiki seem in this episode. Sure she has had her soft moments in episode past, namely a smile here and there, or a slip of caring for Kokuto, but nothing like this. It brings up the interesting question if her core personality is like this without the overbearing SHIKI. As Asoaki plainly put it not just "split personalities", but almost like two different people. Without SHIKI, Shiki seemed lost, even on the verge of gouging her own eyes out to get away from her "gift".

Kokuto saw Shiki through and through though, even earning the nickname "Puppy-Kun" from the hospital nurses. Although him singing "Singing in the Rain" was an interesting backdrop to poor Shiki getting strangled. My favorite part of the episode had to be when Shiki seemed to regain her bearings and made easy work of her attacker. The great music kicked in and Shiki was off slicing and dicing all while giving herself a quick haircut. Who knew a hair cutting scene outside of Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid could be this interesting.

Episode five looks even better with the appearance of a Shirou like character, Coupled with a stoic Magus to rival Asoaki and the return of Fujino. Interestingly enough he seemingly "cured" Fujino in the preview, so it's setting up to be a good episode.
